VIDEO: Moscow flooded, city streets in gridlock as torrential thunderstorms & winds hit Russia

Moscow suffered unprecedented heatwave over the weekend with temperatures reaching 36°C (96°F). But in a dramatic turn of events, it was a different story altogether Monday afternoon, with flash rains flooding the city and causing traffic gridlock.

One of the capital’s main thoroughfares, Vernadsky Avenue, was turned into a lake, and became impassable by car.

One shopping center was turned into a waterfall. shoppers were drenched as rain cascaded through the ceiling.

Yasenevo Metro Station located at the south of the city was forced to close as water poured down the steps, flooding the concourse.

Just outside the city, heavy winds destroyed everything in their path, even bringing down a crane at a construction site.

Lightning struck a transformer substation in a residential area of Shchelkovo – east of Moscow, causing a deafening bang and a fire.

Some of Moscow’s residents are seen in the video welcoming the rain as an opportunity to go for a swim.

On Pravda Street, in the northern suburbs, heavy winds caused the roof of a building to collapse onto the street, with debris landing on cars.
