Robert Fico, Slovakia’s Prime Minister, was shot outside the House of Culture in the town of Handlova on Wednesday afternoon.

Fico, who was hit in the stomach following four shots, was taken to a hospital in Banska Bystrica as the police took over the scene, detaining a suspect.

Deputy speaker of parliament Lubos Blaha confirmed the incident during a session of Parliament and adjourned it until further notice.

Meanwhile, President Zuzana Caputova, who was shocked by the news, has condemned the attack on the prime minister as “cruel and bloody.”
